Our investment in innovation recently showed itself in the Nevada desert when the Freightliner Inspiration Truck became the first licensed autonomous commercial truck to operate on an open U.S. public highway. The building block elements showcased in the Freightliner Inspiration Truck help reduce accidents, improve fuel economy, reduce highway congestion, safeguard the environment, and improve both driver performance and the overall job experience. What’s even better is the fact that many of the systems developed for the Inspiration Truck are already being deployed in today’s Freightliner trucks, making them the best trucks on the road.
The SuperTruck project was is innovative cost-sharing partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy aimed to help accelerate the development and adoption of advanced technology that can greatly improve the efficiency of heavy-duty Class 8 on-highway trucks. DTNA achieved an incredible 115 percent improvement in freight hauling efficiency by reaching an impressive 12.2 miles per gallon. These results were achieved on open public highways in real-world driving conditions.
